Anonymous Commenters

Date September 12, 2007

This kind of comment bugs me. Gibberish name, fake email address, no url, insulting and ignorant comment usually demonstrating the coward hadn’t even bothered to read what I wrote before he or she unloads and then runs back to the bushes. I delete similar ones when they come in. I just needed an example for this post.

Seriously: why do these folks waste their time and mine? If you have enough faith in your position to comment, why don’t you have enough faith to stand by what you say?

People who do this kind of thing are lower than blog spammers. At least with blogspam it’s nothing personal and you can understand the motivation.

Clearly, this commenter has no soul.

I especially enjoyed the run-on in his/her/its second sentence. If you’re going to leave a piece of crap response, at least use proper grammar!

And I second MEL–no soul. Or rhythm and blues.

Agreed. Commenters with no souls shall be banished into the fiery pits of…Nevada, perhaps?

Absolutely. Now if we could just figure out who they were….

Why do trolls troll? You might as well ask why the sun shines.

  6. Fred said:

No, wait. There’s a *reason* for that.

Though their anonymousness is bothersome enough, the irrelevancy seems ever worse. Rarely do they ever seem to be responding to the point. My wife changed her business recently and a good deal of her customers were quite mad. So some anonymous person left comments on her business blog attacking her reasonings for changing it. What’s the point to that?

Who are these people? I imagine that they don’t have any faith in their “commentaries”. Of course, that begs the questions of why they bother, but some people like to do that. And they always seem to be strangely illiterate…

I once wrote a silly post about how much I was over Jessica Simpson and I was astonished at all the anonymous hate that came my way as a result. I deleted almost all of it because well, I was so over it.

When Elf wrote this entry on Georgetown four years ago, the comment thread was filled with some of the most vile comments I’ve seen this side of Fark; some Georgetown students thought she was ragging on their school.
