The 1 Most Annoying Blogfad
July 31, 2007
I can’t remember where it was now, but I stumbled upon a blog-about-blogging site that recommended that a great way to drive traffic to your site is to create lists. 10 best, 10 worst, etc. For some reason, people like numbers and lists. I have to admit I kind of like them too. But enough, people. Here are a few examples I’ve hit upon while surfing:
- 150 resources to help you write better
- Nine Reasons why Bad Grades Don’t Mean Squat
- Top 10 Expensive Keyboards
- 59 Of The Coolest Toilet Signs Around The World
- 4 accessories for better travel photos
- 83 Top Webmaster Resources
- Top 10 Strangest Deaths
- 23 Fearsome Defense Ministry Logos From Around The World
Lists, lists, lists! I can’t take it any more!

Hmmmm…I wonder why I was drawn to the bathroom signs first.
Well, I can’t really say anything, because I like doing the Thursday Thirteen meme. I find it surprisingly challenging.

In my experience, top ten lists definitely tend to drive up blog traffic, but it’s not really the kind of traffic the average blogger wants. That is, it doesn’t attract the kind of readers who will make a thoughtful comment, or click beyond the top ten list and actually look at other content, or even fully realize that they’re looking at a blog in the first place (and not just a random webpage).
In fact, it mostly leads to comments like, “OMG!!! How could you say that X is number one??? Y is way more awesome!!!” Oh, well…

I sense I am in the minority here.
Jess, I think you are right — so far, this blog entry is one of the most popular on my blog. And I’m only talking about one thing.

I actually agree that lists can be a pain - they’re often overused. Will try to do better at avoiding them! Thanks for highlighting my article though, appreciate it. I’ve linked this page back.
