All Grown Up Now
“From Brian Patton”:http://brianpatton.org/2006/02/22/bristol-herald-couriers-new-blog/ I see that the “_Bristol Herald Courier_ has a weblog”:http://bristolviews.mgblogs.com/. I’m pretty excited to see this.
I don’t know if there’s anyone left at the Herald Courier who knows this, but the Bristol Herald Courier web site turns ten this April. I know, because I made it.
The BHC was my first job out of college, and I created and ran their first web site from 1996 to 1997 (1998?). The details are kind of fuzzy because I’m now an old man.
Anyway, every day I took highlights out of the paper and put them on the web site, using Frontier to “render” copies of the pages out of the database into static HTML, which were then uploaded by modem connection early in the morning. Until I left the BHC I handled almost everything on that web site by myself; choosing the articles, deciding design, writing the code. I was sad to see it lose its individual identity when Media General took over what had been, until then, one of the few remaining locally owned newspapers. But I had moved on to new and better things.
Newspapers are very much on my mind at the moment, as I take a “new position at work”:http://www.loc.gov/ndnp/.
