I want a new drug

Trying to broaden my horizons a bit, I replaced the Washington Post feeds on my browser home page with those from local news station “WTOP”:http://www.wtopnews.com/. I’m not sure it was the smartest thing to do. Practically every time I load the page I’m faced with at least one story that’s either heart-wrenching, disgusting, creepy, or all three. And they all fall into the “why did I need to know that?” category.

For example, this week I read about a woman who “killed herself accidentally by falling behind a bookcase”:http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=456&sid=986320 and wasn’t found for eleven days…

bq. Late one night Weber’s sister went into her bedroom and looked behind a bookcase, where she saw the woman’s foot. Using a flashlight the family saw Weber was wedged upside-down behind the unit. “I’m sleeping in the same house as her for 11 days, looking for her,” her mother, Connie Weber, told the St. Petersburg Times. “And she’s right in the bedroom.”

…that someone who “roasted a cat”:http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=456&sid=985735…

bq. A car dealer found a charred cat in a pan of rice and vegetables outside of his business, authorities said. The cat was found Wednesday outside Roy’s Cars and RVs in Ogden, about 31 miles north of Salt Lake City.

…a man “turned terrorist”:http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=456&sid=983017 over penis enlargement surgery:

bq. A man who mailed a bomb to a doctor because he was angry about how his penis enlargement surgery turned out was sentenced Tuesday to four years and 10 months in prison.

Frequently I find these things out before I have coffee. It’s probably _worse_ for my sanity than the politics.
