Quality of Life
May 25, 2007
You know, the big reason for the move was “quality of life.” A lot of people said “the quality of life here is much better.” I spoke to another Northern Virginia transplant — she’s been here five years — and she said “I wake up every day and thank God I’m not in Northern Virginia.” Which sounds a little extreme, I guess, but…
After work today I went to the grocery store and bought quite a bit of food, including milk in glass bottles. When I got home, the Elf started black beans and rice while I made a box of blueberry muffins. (They were supposed to be for breakfast one day this weekend, but the pregnant Elf had to have them immediately.) And after dinner, I ran off to the kitchen again to mix batter for tomorrow’s Belgian waffles.
I sound too much like a mommyblog. Here’s the point: at our old digs, I would have been exhausted by the commute home (even though it was short and even though it was Metro). Then I would have had to fight the grocery store. By the time I got home, I would have barely had the energy to order a pizza online. Which I did often, which is part of the reason I’m the shape I’m in.
But here for some reason I have the energy to do all I did in Arlington and more in the evening.
Incidentally, about those waffles — I always felt intimidated by folding in egg whites. Then it occurred to me: maybe someone has a video online about how to fold in egg whites! Take it away, Trudy!

My wife and I are preparing to move (well, in an unprepared fashion) from the city I’ve always lived in to a town 3000 miles away in Vermont. Your after work tale is a nice bit of inspiration!

Oh, the joys of the internets, lol! Just following Appalachian links, got here, agree with the above post, look to the right, and there’s Maha! Small world. Indeed.

Super bummer about not being able to get fresh milk in glass containers in NoVA. We had that at the co-op down the street from us in Takoma DC.
But I feel you, as we were mentally exhausted with our 9-5’s. This is why we moved to Baltimore to start our own business.
On some level, I think we are doing the same thing with our lives. We needed to make a change and it will work for the better.
