Roadtrip to Bristol
All three of us made a trip to Bristol last weekend to visit. It was Cory’s first significant road trip. Traveling with a baby is a lot more difficult than just hopping in the car and going — I loaded a lot of stuff for an overnight trip and I think we used every bit of it.
Sleepy Bristol has grown a lot since I left. Target just opened a store there, and when I went to take a look it was full of a pile of shell-shocked people. It’s a very unusual store for Bristol. But not half as unusual as the Best Buy that’s been promised. If Bristol can get out from under the City Council that Secretly Reschedules Memorial Day maybe life will improve for this corner of the state.
Old Bristol is still clearly in evidence, however. That giant cross on the hill — the one erected by a highway ministry a few years ago — still reminds people that they are no longer in America but in Christian Country. And the churches still have unintentionally funny quotes on their marquees.
This time the sign at the enormous fancy brick church just off the Interstate read “To what purpose?” An excellent question; I’ve often wondered that myself.
