The Elf and I took off for the western end of Virginia this weekend to look at some mountains and put just a bit of space between us and the city. The weather was overcast Saturday on the way to “Skyline Drive”:http://www.nps.gov/shen/, but just before entering the park the clouds broke and it became a reasonably sunny day.

Completely and totally by accident, we appear to have gotten there at the peak of butterfly season. They were all over the place, and I managed to get “quite a few good pictures”:http://www.flickr.com/photos/thudfactor/tags/skylinedrive/.

Unfortunately I did not get a picture of the bear cub that stopped traffic in both directions momentarily. Fortunately *everyone else* had the sense to stay inside their cars and leave the bear cub alone as well. For one thing, you can reasonably expect a bear cub to be followed by a bear momma. And even if it’s not, bear cubs should stay scared of people — no use teaching them at an early age how easily human arms come off.

We overnighted in Winchester, where again and completely by accident we stumbled into “Los Toltecos”:http://www.toltecos.com/, the best Mexican place we’ve been in since Anita’s. If you’re in the area I recommend you check that place out.

The nearby Sleep Inn not so much — the hotel room looked nice, but one of the closets hid a very noisy air conditioner. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out it was supposed to be installed outdoors…
