On video game color pallets

Date May 11, 2008

I bought a high-definition television set with gorgeous color. Then I bought a high-definition gaming system capable of photo-realistic marvels.

And then I discovered that almost every game made for the Xbox 360 uses a color pallet of mud and midnight. All the games have to be moody and dark and gritty. I am always wondering: why does this game want to stab me in the eye?

Viva Piñata is the obvious exception. Of course, that game is so loud it’s just turning the knife around and using the handle.

Haven’t you heard? The real world is muddy. And grey. And it has bloom. Lots and lots of bloom. BLOOM, I say!

Wow, yeah. Can’t have enough BLOOM. “This is so realistic! Everything has so much glare you can’t see! Isn’t that cool?!”

It’s kind of like that old drawing of the cow eating grass.
