Share the road

Date October 9, 2007

Look, I recognize that bicycles need to share the road. At least, they need to share town and local roads when there’s no decent alternative. But quite frankly there are far too many of you that seem downright obnoxious. I don’t know how many times I’ve come near to collision with a bicyclist on the sidewalk who breezes past with neither bell nor horn nor shouted warning. I’ve seen bicyclists in the street ignore traffic signals, crosswalks, even one-way signs.

Here in bicycle-friendly Blacksburg there’s either bike lane on the street or separate paved bike path for my entire route. And yet half the bikers I see choose to ride in the street, the bike path less than six feet away from them.

So what’s the deal?

They think they live in NYC!

Same shit with car drivers in DC. They don’t realize they live in a big city and need to drive accordingly.

I was just about to write, “Try working in NYC.” The bicycle messengers here can be pretty annoying — although not half as much as the NYC buses.

On the way back from lunch there was another biker in the road and a perfectly empty bike lane unused.

You should throw sticks at their wheels.
