Shipping charges, outside and in

Speaking of shady business practices and sneaking things in under inattentive consumers, CT writes about Shutterfly’s shipping charges. Shipping is a profit generator for them.

We occasionally buy things from overseas and have them shipped here. As long as an American shipper doesn’t handle it, the cost of shipping is often far less than having something trucked in from Kentucky. That includes shipping from Ireland or Great Brittan, where our dollar doesn’t stretch nearly as far.

This is, after all, how BMG makes their money. And I’ve found a number of “deals” online that more than make up for their rock-bottom price by sky-high charges. It’s a ubiquitous business practice stateside, but as far as I’m concerned it’s hiding the price until the very last moment.
