War on Christmas turns violent this year

Date December 13, 2007

I had hoped we could go this season without the stupid “war on Christmas” bullcrap. It’s come pretty close to ruining the holiday for me. Last year, even acknowledging another holiday could get you in trouble. This year, you may have heard, the American Family Association got mad at PetSmart for not segregating the Christmas ornaments from others in their online catalog.

You have also heard by now of the fight that erupted when four Jewish riders responded to a “merry Christmas” greeting with “Happy Chanukah.” The attackers apparently have a history of culturally/racially motivated assault, so it sounds to me like going into a New York subway and hollering “merry Christmas” was deliberate trolling.

Here in Southwest Virginia, the yards are littered with signs that say “Merry CHRISTmas,” in brave defiance of god knows what. Since none of these houses has yet been firebombed, the secular humanist militia must be occupied elsewhere. Perhaps they are laying siege to Bill O’s Brave Christian Soldiers at the Fox News headquarters (they fight them over there…).

David Carucci, mayor of Olean, New York, approved both a nativity scene and the display of a Wiccan pentacle on the lawn of city hall. The nativity scene had been up since early November (Christmas is under such assault now that the season only lasts two months), but when the pentacle was set up next to it — with city permission — it was almost immediately backed over by a truck. Now the pentacle has been removed, the nativity scene moved to the lawn of a church, and Carucci is no doubt asking himself why we can’t have nice things.

So, to recap: the war on Christmas means Christians get to set up nativity scenes and put signs in their front yard saying they’re Christian, wear badges telling people to say “Merry Christmas” to them, and generally act snottier than usual during this most wonderful time of the year. And people who acknowledge their own faith or holiday, risk getting beat up and their displays get torn down. This is what Christmas has become. Oh, that and spending ourselves into more credit card debt.

Happy holidays.

There is a war on Christmas. And it’s being waged (and I fear being won) by the people who would turn it from being a happy holiday of giving, family, and, for some, religious observation into a crass, gaudy, over-produced, overly long, too expensive, occasionally violent mess of a “holiday.”

It’s not unusual for the dominant group to still feel persecuted — and therefore feel justified in its own reverse persecution of others — but frankly I’m sick of it. And I’m a fan of Christmas.

Make no mistake, the thing that these people are peddling is not Christmas. (Much less Christ Mass.)

Why can’t we all just get along? I just want to hang out with my friends and family, eat food, and get some gifts. Why add more stress to an already stressful time of year? I’ve noticed that “Christian charity” flies out the window in the church parking lots and during the holiday season. Merry ChristmaHanaKwanzaaYule to all.
