Amazon’s DRMless MP3s

Date September 28, 2007

Kinda excited about it, just haven’t bought any yet. Here’s the main problem: I haven’t seen anything I really want. The first day the shop opened I went through my Amazon wishlist and checked to see if MP3s were available for any of the albums there. (No.) There’s a James Brown track I want that’s not on any service I’ve found and is also out of print — well, that was a long shot anyway. Pink Floyd’s Piper at the Gates of Dawn is there, but in the three-disk version (first in mono, next in stereo, then once in the 2007 mix!) version. And I don’t want to pay by track. Everyone else I looked for is a touch too obscure apparently.

Anyway, it’s nice to see some decent competition for iTunes — and without DRM.

I was disappointed to learn that The Beatles won’t be available via Amazon either. Since buying my iPod, I haven’t bought any CDs because they aren’t environmentally friendly. Very disappointing.
