Are we there yet?

I’ve been at least as surprised by the response to the Terri Schiavo issue as the Republican leadership. I thought, “as they certainly did”:http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Schiavo/story?id=600937, that their actions would welcomed by the pro-lifers in specific but ignored people in general. Apparently I am wrong. For some reason I would have thought the constitutional and government powers issues raised by Congressional interfering with Terri Schiavo were raised years ago and much more strongly with the PATRIOT act and Bush’s insistance that he has the right to incarcerate anyone he chooses in secret on secret evidence and without access to a lawyer or judicial review.
The idea that the Government can arrest you and not tell you or your family why — I *thought* that would be more startling than passing a law to change the court system for one person. Who knew?

My guess is, most people don’t think they could possibly be arrested under the Patriot act because they’re not terrorists. It’s much easier, however, to envision Mom in the nursing home and the government stepping in to overrule your doctor.
