Cute names for sewage plants
July 21, 2008
So they want to name a sewage plant in “honor” of George W. Bush. Ha-ha funny, right? Imagine you work there. What does the fact that some people think naming a sewage plant after someone is an insult say to you?
The employees of the sewage plant have an important, thankless job that most people would rather ignore, and they do not deserve to be made the punch-line to a President Bush is Crap joke. Can we come up with some other idea that doesn’t cause so much collateral damage?

You make a really good point, that I hadn’t considered. Until now, I thought this was a great idea — not so much because I hate Bush, but because the change was representative of free speech and healthy political protest which is never a bad thing.
But, your reasoning is sound, and may have changed my opinion on it.

At first glance it seems an appropriate gesture, but I see your point. And upon thinking about it for a few minutes, I have to reflect that in a sewage plant the sewage goes in and clean water comes out. So the appropriateness is also in question.

Let’s compromise and just name the sewage after Bush.

I, however, have a sense of humor and I think it IS hilarious. And from now on, I’ll be calling my ass, “The Decider”. Its my ass, so I get to call it what I want!! :)
None the less, is there really anyone at the plant offended by this? They DO know what they do for a living, right? And you’re telling me they don’t joke about their job all the time? They don’t have a sense of humor? I have had many jobs that were truly crap and I would have loved to rename the positions to something related to Bush, say “Appointed Doofus”. Heck, I like the job I currently have and I still don’t mind being calling it rude names. For God sakes, a number of people (well my brother-in-law and his friends) nickname me “Monkey”… I was so offended by that, that I went and put it on my license plate.
Is it truly not possible to both knowingly recognize and respect the fact that people who work at that sewage plant have a hard job that most people wouldn’t want to do (and for goodness sakes, their not saints people, they are normal people doing a job THEY decided to do…) AND laugh your ass off at renaming their plant “George W. Bush Sewage Plant”?? If you want to tip-toe around the feelings of people who deserve more credit concerning their jobs than they do… lets tip-toe around soldiers, policeman, firemen, and teachers. But you know what, we probably don’t need to… cause most of those that I’ve met call themselves and each other horrible but endearing names, so I’m sure they wouldn’t be offended either.
We, you, me, all of us liberals, really really really need to get over ourselves. The one thing I tend to agree with the conservatives (and that doesn’t happen often) is that liberals can be a little overly sensitive and WAY too politically correct.
Lighten up!!

I’m just trying to apply the golden rule here. I think it’s terribly condescending.

And I’d argue “condescension” IS one of the roots of some really funny funny stuff!!
In any case, I do know what you’re getting at… and there is a limit to humor and where something might cross the line. And maybe this degree of “whats funny” and “what crosses the line” is a product the media obsessed satirical culture we live in where most people get their news from Jay Leno or Jon Stewart. But humor has always been one of the most popular mechanisms for dissent and political discourse. And unfortunately, effective humor often hurts someone (psychologically that is). And maybe in this case, someone at the plant might be offended. In which I would suggest change their job!! But they do have every right to be offended… and I will still have every right to laugh my ass of at renaming their plant and apparently the people of SF will have the right to vote on it!! I LOVE DEMOCRACY!!! I LOVE FREE SPEECH!!!

lasloo needs to chill. I’m with you on this, Thud. Condescension is only funny when the target deserves it. Did you catch that, lasloo, or am I talking too fast for you?

Hey diesel. I get Thud’s point. I get your point. I still think its hilarious and very much want to see it. And I still think you guys are over-reacting. I have no problems with the sewage plant being renamed. Then again, I don’t work there. If I did work there, I might feel differently. I understand that. However, there’s tons of other horrible things out there that I should care more about but I don’t. And its not that these things aren’t worth caring about, they probably are. But for most people, they can make a commitment, at most, to a handful of issues that you truly truly care about and affect you. And worrying about condescending to a bunch of sewage plant workers is not high on that list. So, I say, rename the plant, rename my butt, and I can’t wait to visit the place next time I’m in SF!!! It could be the newest SF tourist attraction after the bridge and Alcatraz!!
BTW, on the cliche meter, diesel, how does the phrase “am I talking too fast for you” compare to a phrase like “Anything cool happening” ? Burritos! Dogs! Classic!
