I promise not to pun on “Shrock.”

Date August 31, 2004

I see our good friend Ed Shrock of Virginia’s second district (that’d be Virginia Beach, Hampton Roads, and Pat Robertson’s Regent University) has resigned suddenly because tapes of him trolling the phone lines for gay sex have been released. Shrock was a very conservative republican with a 92% rating from the Christian Coalition and a co-sponsor for the hate amendment. “You can read more here”:http://www.blogactive.com/2004/08/action-write-congressman-ed-schrock.html and practically anywhere else on the lefty blongwing. This link, however, is the spot that outed Shrock.

As a general rule I’m not in favor of outing closeted gays. There are many reasons a gay person might still be in the closet. Not the least of which is the hatred encouraged by people like, well, Ed Shrock.

A gay politician — especially someone who continually supports legislation that turns gay people into second class citizens — needs to be revealed for being a hypocrite.

Furthermore, a conservative politician who insists that there’s no right to personal privacy in sexual matters should have his or her sexual matters discussed openly and often to remind him or her of the political primacy of the Golden Rule.

When I lived in England, the government had a big anti-scandalous-behavior campaign (I’m not sure of the name – Back To Basics?). They basically decided that only politicians without secrets should stay in office.

Suddenly, all the Members of Parliament began admitting their affairs and illegitmate children, and then resigning in shame. They had to end the campaign because so many MPs were coming forward!

It was pretty funny. And somehow made Congress seem no so bad.
