Operation Hasten Disaster

Date September 23, 2005

What’s this? _Fiscal Responsibility_ from the Republicans? Say it isn’t so! Well, yeah. It isn’t so. Talking Points Memo says Operation Offset’s “math is wicked warped”:http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2005_09_18.php#006610, cutting billions (with-a-b) from programs that are only funded in the millions (with-an-m). Operation Offest also suggests significant cuts to the Centers for Disease Control, which is an agency we would certainly need should a biological attack ever take place on American soil. Not to mention, of course, the epidemic nightmare waiting to happen in a Louisiana suddenly stripped of basic infrastructure.

And at the same time Bush is forcing his Gulf Coast Wage Cut — so the profits of contractors can be protected at the expense of the people who drive nails — the Republicans are proposing significant cuts to the Medicaid and Medicare programs. Katrina pushed thousands into poverty and the Gulf Coast Wage Cut is going to keep them there. Then they won’t have access to medical care, which means they’re not going to go to doctors when they get sick, which means epidemics are likely to have much more time to spread before a crippled, underfunded, and ineffectual Centers for Disease Control can try to address the issue.

Who do they have in charge of writing this shit? “John Stossel”:http://www.thudfactor.com/textpattern/731/death-to-the-department-of-commerce?
