The liberal gauntlet

Most days out of the last two weeks, my morning commute has been hampered — no, assaulted — by young men and women with their earnestness matched only their rudeness. They stand on either side of the sidewalk — occasionally on both sides — and attack with fliers all people exiting the subway. They are generally yelling things, like “support the working man!” (_very_ gender-aware there, good job) or “there is still hope!” or “an important message from “LaRouche”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyndon_LaRouche!”

Yesterday, a group of mostly white kids were handing out fliers to _only the black people_. I could not decide whether to be relieved they were letting me run the gauntlet unmolested or annoyed at the implication that I was one of The Man who was holding a brother down.

What I do is not much, but I am there every day working for the larger cause of Democracy. And there are others at that stop I am sure who are much more directly involved in making things better for people both domestic and foriegn. And what do they get in the morning? Some of them probably before their second cup of coffee? Berated by college-age strangers who have _no clue_ what these “ingnorant masses” they’re yelling at are trying to accomplish.

There’s no point. You want government to work for you? Then _stand aside_ and let us get to the office.
