Comparing apples to…

Date February 10, 2005

There’s a new ad campain on the Washington DC subway. I wanted to get a picture of it for you, but with armed guards outside and people being warned to watch out for suspicious behavior like picture-taking, I’ve been kind of leery about taking subway photos.

In my station the ad occupies the entire hallway — six posters, with two repeating.

bq. Marriage works
Kids of Married Parents do better in school
Marriage Works
Married people make more money
Marriage Works
Kids of Married Parents do better in school

The ads come without citation, or for that matter any indication of what is “worse.” I suppose that exercise is left up to the reader:

* _Married people make more money_ than dead hamsters.
* _Married people make more money_ than “homeless Iraq war veterans”:http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0208/p02s01-ussc.html.
* _Married people make more money_ than Mariah Carey’s last album.
* _Married people make more money_ than weapons grade plutonium.

I mean, really. And what a reason to get married! “I don’t like her that much, but I’ve been looking for that raise…”

*Pre-posting update:* The “_districted!_ weblog”:http://gaurag.textamerica.com/?r=2030713 points me to the parent website, which has “images of the propaganda posters”:http://www.cfoc.org/marriage/media.cfm#billboards.

You know, I’ve seen those ads at the metro and elsewhere as well. I honestly didn’t think twice about ‘em. I didn’t even think about it possibly being anti-gay or anti-non-traditional-family. My immediate thoughts were that it was just an ad against premarital-sex. And I guess at some level, since I am married and with kids, I went with the flow. Of course, married couples make more than single couples. Duh! And of course, the more adults there are in a household to care for a child, the more well-rounded that child will be and thus possibly better grades. (Note, I didn’t specify the gender of the adults).

Anyway, I can definitely see how the other negative viewpoints can be deduced by this ad. I’m actually more surprised at how much I didn’t really think about how else this ad could be interpreted.

In any case, be prepared for the right to come back and complain about the PC Nazis attacking these ads. And then twist the negative reaction as if it were FOR teenagers getting pregnant at an early age.

Um, you can live together and have kids without getting married.

No, I’m pretty sure that’s still illegal in Virginia.

The homophobic laws in VA are an absolute shame. They already have laws on the books making it illegal for any two people of the same sex to have any kind of benefits or rights of anything resembling marriage. That is just SO cruel. Not to mention, that there are many situations where two non-intimate people of the same sex may need to request guardianship over one or the other.

Now, they are trying to take those same laws and put them into the VA consitution. And, I just read recently that there is a bill entered into the General Assembly trying to ban gay adoptions.

    Cruel and heartless!!

Now, I do feel confident that the Supreme Court will eventually overturn these mean and hateful laws. But, that’ll probably take another 4 or 5 years!!! And thats assuming we have a similar group of people on the SC bench!!

    UGH!!!

So who is behind these propaganda posters? Some Bushy group there in Washington, D.C.?

It’s the “Campaign For our Children,” a 501©3 based in Baltimore, MD. You can read more about who they are and who funds them here: http://www.cfoc.org/AboutCFOC/
