War on Sex: the next theater
June 30, 2006
In the right-winger’s war on sex, the birth control pill is like Iran — it’s where the wingnuts want to invade, but they’re getting a bit ahead of themselves. The birth control pill is often credited as a significant factor in the increase of women’s rights, and has been under attack recently, again, as an abortifacient.
The ultimate aim of the anti-choice movement has never been to save the lives of children or they would have supported far _better_ sex education, _better_ access to birth control, _better_ access to medical care, and a _stronger_ welfare state. Instead, they sue schools for passing out condoms and support pharmacists who refuse to provide prescription medication. They want to see more frequent, less controlled pregnancy. They want to see a world again where women — even married women — have to choose between a career and sex.

Thank you for writing this. I honestly don’t understand how the anti-birth control movement is spreading - or surviving - in this day and age. I guess it’s always been there, but now conservative cons are feeling ~empowered~? So many extremists and fundamentalists in our own country… It’s amazing.
