High Definition winner, DRM loser
January 6, 2008
It looks like we may have a winner in the high-definition format battle, and Sony’s won one for a change. Warner Brothers has announced it’s dropping support for HD-DVD and will be distributing only in Blu-Ray. As Business Week points out, though, this comes at a time when downloadable movies are preparing to become much more user-friendly.
Sure am glad I didn’t spring for the $150 HD-DVD expansion on the XBox 360.
Sony has also apparently given up the fight on DRM on digital music downloads. That’s great news, too. Hopefully folks are starting to deal with the fact that you can’t control every little thing everyone does with your product.

Whenever I see these discussions I can’t help thinking of my dad. 15 years ago when CD came on the scene, he put off buying a player for a couple years. He was sure they would become obselete very quickly and didn’t want to spend money on a machine that he would only use for a short time.

There are a lot of rumors around that Paramount will also drop HD-DVD. They’ve denied it so far, but if they did leave that would pretty much do it for HD-DVD.
