Interoperability and Apple

2004 April 17

Steve Jobs on opening up both iTunes and the iPod to other programs:

The iPod already works with the No. 1 music service in the world, and the iTunes Music Store works with the No. 1 digital-music player in the world. The No. 2s are so far behind already. Why would we want to work with No. 2? [ Apple Rebuffs Music Overture]

Well, there goes my hope of putting Apple ACC files on my Nomad, I suppose. I’ll have to buy the iPod, which looks cute but is more expensive and has crappy batteries.

You know, one of the things I dislike about Microsoft is their attempt to control what we buy and who we buy it from through their operating system. I had considered switching (back) to Apple at some point. And occasionally toyed with buying an iPod. In truth, it was only interoperability issues (and crappy batteries) holding me back. But it looks like it’d just be a “meet the new boss, same as the old boss” situation. Worse, in fact, since my Nomad plays quite a few different types of media files.
