Belt tightening in the war on terror
June 16, 2004
The Washington Post has an interesting article today about Congressional restoration of anti-gang funding. The White House tried to cut these programs—which are proven effective and apparently have had significant results—to almost nothing. The cuts included both crime prevention and investigation.
Congress restored the funding and added a little extra on top, including funds to create a national anti-gang unit in the FBI.
How does this relate to terrorism? Well, Bush ought to know: Jose Padilla, the gentleman held for two years without charges or legal council for being an “Enemy combatant,” is a gang member. And, of course, we’ve all been told that the illegal drug trade (which has a symbiotic relationship with street gangs) is a major source of income for the Evil Ones Who Hate Freedom™.
Once again, the Administration has put our safety and security at risk in favor of tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.
