Big Government
November 25, 2002
When I was a young kid I would frequently get lectured about the importance of labelling video tapes correctly. I had a tendency to forget to affix or change a label on a cassette after I taped something. So the tape marked “General Hospital” might in fact be six hours of MTV videos. This caused endless frustration to my parents and sibling, but at the very least served to remind us on a daily basis that labels do not necessarily accurately describe the contents.
Something that liberatarian-minded Republicans should keep in mind.
Republicans have often been called the party of small government and Democrats the party of big government. For the most part Democrats have shed this philosophy, but they are still stuck with the label. Yet another example of the Republican Party’s superior marketing techniques.
Conversely, this particular Republican administration has not been a great boon to the cause of deregulation of people’s private lives. For example, this administration is preparing to spend $245 million of OUR money to let them poke through our bank statements and so forth without a warrant.
Watch your civil liberties, people. I know we are so accustomed to having them they seem natural, but there are people who want to take them away.
