Friday!

Date March 29, 2002

You know, I could complain about politics today, but instead I think I’ll just send you over to Howard Kurtz at the Washington Post. His rant about doubletalk is pretty much where I am these days. So. On to more trivial stuff instead.

Sarah’s new pennywhistle arrived yesterday. It’s a brass Burke, and I’m sure at some point she’ll tell everyone about it. It’s a very nice, expensive pennywhistle. The good news: it’s more mellow in tone than the less expensive Feadogs or Clarkes. Especially in the second octave. The bad news is that Sarah can get a third octave out of the whistle. This octave is skull-piercingly loud and squeeky. Our cats are not pleased. We are replacing all our glassware with plastic.

I, on the other hand, purchased a copy of Arcanum. I needed a new computer role-playing game. It’s been quite some time since I had one. It’s beautifully done and sufficiently different from other role playing games that it’s taking me a while to understand what’s going on.

I have also heard from Antje (or Antye, she seems to spell it either way) Duvekot. I saw her in concert with Solas a few weeks ago. I emailed Solas when I failed to find any current information on her, and they forwarded the message on to her. She says her web site should be ready soon, and so should her first studio album. Yay! When the web site goes online, I’ll let you know.

And now for the Friday Five (I seem to get every other one of these):

1. If you could eat dinner with and “get to know” one famous person (living or dead), who would you choose? Molly Ivans. I want to learn how to write like her. Actually, I want to learn how to write like a lot of people. But especially her.

2. Has the death of a famous person ever had an effect on you? Who was it and how did you feel? It’s hard for me to get too broken up over people I don’t know personally. But it was sad when Jackie Gleason passed on. Jim Henson’s death is one I remember very well. I still miss Chuck Jones.

3. If you could BE a famous person for 24 hours, who would you choose? George W. Bush. I’d reverse so many bits of his domestic agenda in 24 hours.

4. Do people ever tell you that you look like someone famous? Who? Yes. But I can’t remember who, because I don’t believe them.

5. Have you ever met anyone famous? Yes, several. But the first that comes readily to mind is Hank Ketcham. I also once “realized” in digital fashion a sketch done by Charles Vess. Vess sat beside me and offered suggestions while I worked on it.
