How to piss off your customers
You ever wish you could take back every kind word you’ve ever said about a product? I feel that way about Media Jukebox. I bought a license for this software a few years ago when I needed to manage a more and more enormous MP3 collection.
Later, they released a new version and those of us who had purchased it previously got the new version for free, which was very nice.
Now they have released another new version of the software. If you bought the previous version (version 8) you get to buy the new software for $13.00. If you bought version 7 and then upgraded to version 8, you have to pay the full brand-new price of $34.95 ($39.95 once the final version is released).
The oldest customers — even the ones who have stayed current via the upgrade path — are effectively screwed.
A slightly higher upgrade price I could see. $20, maybe even $30. And it isn’t like I’ve been using Photoshop 2 for ten years and want a $50 upgrade to version 7 — I have followed thier upgrade path exactly, and it was their decision not to charge for the last upgrade.
This is a fine way to thank your early customers for “seeing the light” before than everyone else.
So, keep this in when you’re deciding what software to use to manage your media. Perhaps you might like to do business with someone else.
