Human Sacrifice? Why the hell not?
First of all, some changes to the web site: I’ve updated the About page. Also, the blueyonder skin has been available for the last day or so. I haven’t said anything about it because I was still toying with it, but today I added a subtle background. That made all the difference. So take a look.
I finally got around to looking at introductory material from the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids today. This is something Sarah’s been interested in for awhile, and she’s been asking me to check it out for the last month or so to see if I wanted to do the online coursework, too. I’ve been putting it off, I think, because the practice of a mystical religion makes me a bit nervous. It’s the old Computer Science/English Student conflict coming to life again.
I believe a mystical approach to life is not only constructive, but also more valid than the entirely materialistic view that scientific inquiry takes. Not that I’m knocking scientific inquiry either. I work for a science association after all. It has a place, but so does mysticism.
The problem I have is putting this into practice. At my very philosophical core, I’m afraid I’m a materialist and rationalist. My rationalism, logic, and philosophical studies have all lead me to believe in the necessity of a mystical approach to religion - - but I’ve also retained all the biases from my skeptical past. It’s hard not to dismiss it all out-of-hand as silly.
In part, of course, it’s hard to do that because so much of it is. Of course, that doesn’t mean it all is. How do you rationally judge concepts and practice without a materialistic standard? That’s my quandary. And I can’t help but think I’m making it more difficult for myself than it needs to be.
This was lots of fun:
I Am A: Neutral Good Half-Elf Bard Ranger
Alignment:Neutral Good characters believe in the power of good above all else. They will work to make the world a better place, and will do whatever is necessary to bring that about, whether it goes for or against whatever is considered ‘normal’.
Race:Half-Elves are a cross between a human and an elf. They are smaller, like their elven ancestors, but have a much shorter lifespan. They are sometimes looked down upon as half-breeds, but this is rare. They have both the curious drive of humans and the patience of elves.
Primary Class:Bards are the entertainers. They sing, dance, and play instruments to make other people happy, and, frequently, make money. They also tend to dabble in magic a bit.
Secondary Class:Rangers are the defenders of nature and the elements. They are in tune with the Earth, and work to keep it safe and healthy.
