Is it plugged in?
You know, there’s nothing that quite matches the sinking feeling of plugging a new hard drive in laptop and having your OS installation software report that it can’t find any hard drive. Yick.
Now, see, I’m a software guy. Let me be more specific: I am a web developer. Which means hardware problems leave me feeling a bit … well … out of my element. And when that happens I get tense and angry, which certainly doesn’t doesn’t help me solve the problem.
Well, after several hours of trying to force the BIOS to recognize the drive, attempting different methods of OS installation, etc. etc., I took a good look at the drive I had removed from the computer. Which looked almost exactly the same except for…
… that adapter sticking off the end of the old drive. D’oh. Once I took the adapter from the old drive and put it on the new one, everything worked swimmingly.
