Business knows best, right? They can get things done more efficently than the federal government. So we’ll just turn everything over to business. Sounds great until you read things like this.
Government subcontracting and grants are, all too often, used to line a very few people’s pockets with the tax money collected from everyone in the nation. We get screwed, the government gets screwed, and people like Albert R. “Butch” Hopkins, Jr. get a $90,000 annual salary and other perks:
Through the subsidiaries, Hopkins has enjoyed a controversial perk: luxury cars. The Mercedes-Benz he drives — as well as previous cars, including two Jaguars — has been leased by Anacostia Holding as part of his compensation package. The lease payments for Hopkins and two other employees totaled $56,225 in a recent three-year period, according to an audit submitted to the city by the nonprofit.
