New Music
April 29, 2003
Since “Glen is reviewing Apple’s new music service”:http://www.art-machine.org/archives/001956.html, I think now is a good time to mention that three (yes, three!) of my favorite artists have new albums — two of which have actually been released.
*Aimee Mann* (yes, the “Till Tuesday Chick”) has released “Lost in Space”:http://www.aimeemann.com/ on her own label. If you have dismissed Aimee Mann because she’s blond, she sounds pop, or because she was “80s New Wave,” I recommend you give her a good long listen. What Nine Inch Nails does with noise and static and screams, Mann does with catchy guitar hooks and light melodies. It’s like getting a mouthful of cotton candy and finding razor blades in it.
*James McMurtry* has released “Saint Mary of the Woods”:http://www.sugarhillrecords.com/catalog/pagemaker.cgi?1071 on the Sugar Hill label. It’s been three years since his last album, and it’s great to hear him again. A friend of mine once described McMurtry as “John Prine with a vocal range.”
*Josh Lamkin* is a young North Carolina folk singer we saw in Vienna, Virginia a few months back. His second CD, _Boy Genius_, should be released soon — the tracks are mastered and they’re apparently working on the packaging. You can read about him and hear samples from his excellent album _Good Again_ “here at his web site”:http://www.joshlamkin.com/.
Now go. Buy. Listen.
