NaNoWriMo starts in two hours and I have no idea what my novel is going to be about. This feels familiar.

Just stay on schedule and you can finish. My friend is doing it and all you have to do is make sure you put out the minimum 1500 words a day… good luck!

I got nothing written yesterday. Today, I’ve so far managed a little under 800 words. That I need to double that, and do the same thing every day seems like an impossibility. Especially when all I’m writing so far is dialogue. (It hasn’t helped that I’ve been mainly writing scripts for a sketch comedy show lately.)

Intellectually, I think I’ve accepted that I really can’t produce a great novel in a month. I just need to convince myself to write anyway. Because I can produce a salvagable novel.

I got a little over 3000 words in over the weekend, and decided to send it all to the circular file. The story scope was too big. No way I could come up with a passable storyline and wrap it up in 50k words. So I went back to the “drawing board” (literally today), and pulled out a map I made up a couple of weeks ago. I had written down some background info in the “world” already, and I’d done some character creating exercises as well. So I took all that information, then broke the whole thing (50k words) up into the number of scenes required to mee the goal - 25 at 2000 words a pop. Then ran an outline out with that basic plotline, with two climaxes. One about 2/3rds through and one right at the end. It’s a simple fantasy story that takes place in a small, small part of the world I mapped out. So I’ll detail that section of the map, and leave the rest for some other story later. I’ve basically got 6 main characters, I’ve decided to kill 2 of ‘em (don’t know which, I’ll let the writing take care of that), and one time-constrained quest. I decided a race against the clock seemed appropriate considering the context.
