Speaking of spam…

Date January 3, 2004

I’ve been getting some interesting blogspam recently, too. They used to just say something like “this is a good page.” But the faux comments are getting … weirder.

For example, one I deleted yesterday said this:

bq. Your page bears the necessary information for people were interested in the given question.

Um, thank you. Yes, that sounds natural.

And what I just got today:

bq. The interesting information located on your page gives I peep for mind more than a million audience to which I concern also.

Oddly enough, all the blogspammers seem to be hammering the same entry: “isn’t it ironic?”:http://www.thudfactor.com/archives/001379.php

BTW, what use is this kind of spam if it doesn’t try to sell anything? Does their name link to some website or something? Secondly, how can you be sure that it’s not written by a non-English speaking chap trying to respond in English?

I guess Mike doesn’t know this because he doesn’t have a blog. :-D Each comment box contains a URL field. The above comments all linked to buisness web sites, not weblogs or any other sort of community-like forum. The comments themselves did not address the topic, just paid a kind of generic compliment.

A less subtle, but very common, approach is “this is a good discussion. here are some links I think you would also be interested in:” followed by twenty links to herbal marital aids.

The purpose of doing this is not to sell immediately, but to game search engines like Google that take links to the site in consideration when trying to determine site placement in search results.
