Sunday Drive

Date September 29, 2003

Sarah and I took a drive yesterday on the George Washington Parkway. We passed a sign for the CIA Headquarters Building, which in 1999 was renamed the “George Bush Center for Intellegence.” Driving passed, we concluded that 43’s greatest legacy may be to improve people’s general impression of 41.

I would give a great deal to have Daddy in office right about now.

That doesn’t bring me to the subject of turn signals, but I’m going to say something about them anyway. In the last week I’ve been honked at twice because people seemed surprised I was moving into their lane, despite the fact that my turn signal was on for thirty, fifty feet or so. Just yesterday a Jetta honked at me for trying to take a left exit — my turn signal had been on for some time, and she refused to back off or speed up to get past me. In fact, she sped up to pace me, so I was having difficulty getting around her. When I finally muscled in, she was offended. And last week, I changed lanes to make a left turn, only to be honked at by someone barrelling down the left lane at forty miles over the speed limit. When I *started* the lane change, he was four car lengths behind me. When he honked at me, there was still a car length between us. What’s up with that?

It’s been such a problem recently that yes, Sarah and I *did* make sure the turn signal was functional. Isn’t driving supposed to be a co-operative activity?

I thought driving was a co-operative activity.

Sometimes I purposefully do not use my turn signal on the Beltway because people seem to consider it more of a dare than a courtesy. It almost seems safer to make sure the way is clear and then go.

I believe our fair city got a discount on their police cars. It seems they all came without turn signals. At least it appears to be that way.

Ken, no sane person would ever be in your way.

Is *anything* done in a cooperative manner in the D.C. area?
