Thanksgiving

Date November 27, 2003

Happy Thanksgiving! Or, for those of you who aren’t American, have a nice day.

I don’t usually spend a great deal of time thinking about Thanksgiving, but this year I am. Probably in part because instead of going to visit my family or Sarah’s family this year, we’re staying at home. We’re playing host to a few people who, for one reason or another, are also not going home to visit family. I’ve had a turkey breast in brine since about 7:00 last night. I actually had nightmares about turkey preparation.

There’s also freshly baked bread. Fresh bread is a marvel. Especially when it comes out of your own oven.

So yes, I’ve been thinking about Thanksgiving. I’ve been thinking about how — except for grilling sandwiches and frying hamburgers, both of which require Sarah’s genes — I do most of the cooking around here. One thing I’m very thankful for is I don’t have to live with a mind like “du Toit’s”:http://www.kimdutoit.com/dr/essays/essays.php?id=P2327, jumping at any shadow that suggests he might not be masculine.

I’m thankful to my parents for raising me in such a way that 50% of my energy is not taken up conjuring illusions of hyperheterosexuality. _I can hold my wife’s purse in public._ Yes! I can! Which would be handy for her if she had a purse, which she doesn’t.

Well, I wasn’t planning to write a political rant here but it’s in danger of turning into one.

There’s still a lot of cooking and cleaning ahead of me today. But I’m really looking forward to it. I hope you all have a good Thanksgiving, and good food.

John, you make the manliest bread in the whole wide world. I suddenly wonder why we decided to travel. I want bread!
