You just bias

You know, I’ve always considered bias to be a failure of critical thinking. But it seems that more and more people see all criticisms as proof of bias. Which is kind of dumb, because if you (for example) criticize a media outlet for being biased against you when they’ve caught you in “one”:http://www.spinsanity.org/post.html?2003_03_02_archive.html#90397728 “of”:http://www.spinsanity.org/post.html?2003_02_09_archive.html#90318532 “many”:http://www.spinsanity.org/post.html?2003_01_19_archive.html#90230905 “lies”:http://www.spinsanity.org/posts/200105.html#02a, what exactly are you asking? That they be so biased in favor of you that they take everything you say at face value? Or that they have an unreasonable predeliction for thinking the truth is a good thing?

Some conservatives seem to have convinced people that any criticism of their policies in the press is the result of unreasoning bias. Others, not content with that, have gone for the two point conversion: any airing of opposing viewpoints is clearly “bias.” Which is funny, because airing only one side of a story is one of the hallmarks of bias.

One of the biggest problems of the US media is that they avoid the “bias” charge by simply repeating everyone’s press releases. That doesn’t do anyone any good; it just makes all politics seem like a he-said-she-said muddle. The BBC may occasionally put a slant on things, but I can’t for the life of me see why trying to match reality to statements from the White House is evidence of anything but responsible reporting.
