Blockbuster raises prices, customers go out of the door
December 20, 2007
Some time ago I decided to give Blockbuster’s rent-by-mail service a try and rather liked it. But late yesterday they raised the price from $24.99 for their top-tier program to $34.99.
To continue to bring you the unmatched convenience of both online and in-store DVD rentals, your monthly subscription fee will change from $24.99 to $34.99. This adjustment will go into effect on your next billing cycle on or after December 27, 2007. The benefits of your subscription plan will remain the same. [ from email notification ]
Rather than wait until the new plan goes into effect (for me) on January 20th, I went ahead and canceled yesterday — thus saving myself this month’s fees as well. The rate hike doesn’t seem popular with customers, especially those in the top tier like myself.

What, you don’t want to pay more for less, or the same, features?
The in-store drop-off seemed like the only real draw for Blockbuster over Netflix. And with all the nearby brick-and-mortar Blockbusters near me closing shop, there wasn’t even that.
I pay $16.99 for Netflix’s 3-at-a-time, which appears to be about half the price Blockbuster was asking from you. Now if I could get Netflix’s Watch Instantly feature to work properly again…
