The term “politically correct” is now so politically loaded as to be almost meaningless, just another way of denigrating and dismissing messages with which one disagrees. Its equivalent migh t be the oft maligned “do gooders” who seem to be the source of so much angst exhibited in letters to newspapers.

I think you’ve hit on it exactly. Obviously, political correctness can go too far. (I think it’s perfectly acceptable to be asked not to call someone “shrimp,” for example, but I think it’s ridiculous to call that same someone “vertically challenged.”) But I think that anti-political correctness is often just an excuse to be offensive to others while demanding special consideration for yourself. It’s a mindset that says, “Remember when the only people we had to be nice to were white, Christian land-owning males? What was so wrong about that?”
