More hosting nightmares
January 15, 2008
I still haven’t moved everything over from my old host, which means I have an open account with them.
I just got a nastygram from them telling me I owe $514.27, with $484.32 past due. The past due dates are all in the future. Most of them are repeated. Apparently, accounts receivable is so eager to get through this year they got ahead of themselves. Twice.

Finally, proof of time travel!

Yeah, they’re aware of the situation and working to resolve it. This, unfortunately, seems to be a common refrain from Dreamhost. In this case, it doesn’t overly concern me — since it does seem like a dumb and honest mistake and, more importantly, I don’t appear to actually have been automatically billed that false past due amount. But in the case of actual hosting, when e-mail or website or web panel goes down, it really is an annoyance that I wish they’d address more often before the fact. An ounce of prevention, and all that. Some additional redundancy, so that when a server crashes, another kicks in — and, hopefully, the customer notices no change, much less total disruption of service. I still like Dreamhost, and don’t plan on switching hosts just yet, but people are not wrong to be aggravated with them.
Problems are going to happen — that’s pretty much inevitable. But I (and I think most of their customers) would be happier with a system that can roll with the punches and deal with those problems, than with smiling happy repair-people telling us it’ll all be working any time now…
