I am thinking globally and acting locally. People will catch on eventually. If not, they'll simply moan more... I just can't believe Apple will follow in the footsteps of Microsoft.

My point is "get a Mac" isn't an acceptable answer. Microsoft is a monopolistic entity that has far too much influence on the computing industry as a whole and does great damage to development, manufacturing, and innovation in the industry. Considering the significant barriers to changing operating systems, a migration to alternate OSs big enough to make a perceptible dent in Microsoft's market clout is highly unlikely.

Adam Smith's invisible hand is not going to come out of the sky and fix this.

Pair that with the legislative power the MPAA and the RIAA wield, and you have a grave threat to the concept of private property and individual liberty -- and computer manufacturers that feel compelled to comply. Even Apple has toyed with Trusted Computing, and they have not precisely demonstrated themselves to be transparent and open when it comes to DRM issues. If Vista becomes ubiquitous, look for "features" like these in Macs in just a few short years.

What we need is not to choose an alternate operating system. What we need is some good old-fashioned trust-busting.

Nice thought, but Microsoft is pretty darn close to a monopoly -- despite Apple's recent gains. Consider this from the cited paper:

bq. As a user, there is simply no escape. Whether you use Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 95, Linux, FreeBSD, OS X, Solaris (on x86), or almost any other OS, Windows content protection will make your hardware more expensive, less reliable, more difficult to program for, more difficult to support, more vulnerable to hostile code, and with more compatibility problems. Because Windows dominates the market and device vendors are unlikely to design and manufacture two different versions of their products, non-Windows users will be paying for Windows Vista content-protection measures in products even if they never run Windows on them.

OSX is not an escape, it is a dodge. For now.
