More word about the “greatest health care system in the world”: infant mortality

bq. The U.S. has the second worst newborn death rate in the developed world, according to a Save the Children/World Health Organization report. [ "Mahablog":http://www.mahablog.com/2006/05/09/at-least-we-beat-latvia/ ]

I’m sure all those “culture-of-life” Republicans will get right on this and fix those access to health care “disparities,” free-market system be damned.

As Maha points out, part of this problem stems from Bush’s cuts to family planning budgets and contraception education without a concomitant increase in public funding for (at the very least) prenatal care. The result (for the time being) is more unwanted pregnancies and more pregnancies among people who can least afford the medical care. Which results in more dead babies.

I’m sure it’s because those low-income wimmin having consequence-free sex are you know, smoking and drinking and doing crack during their pregnancies. Yeah, that must be it…
