Birthday iPod

Date October 24, 2006

I really wasn’t paying attention, but I inadvertently celebrated the iPod’s fifth birthday when I bought a new 5G video iPod from Apple. My current Zen Sleek was acting strange, and since a DAP has my constant companion for almost six years now, I decided to replace it before it got to crisis stage.

It is my third, and my experience with the previous iPods I’ve had have been less than reliable. But everyone else’s DAP seems to be racing to the bottom of the reliability heap, and Creative has hitched its wagon to Microsoft. So, it’s back to the iPod. My reasons for *not* buying from Apple, instead of increasing, seem to be _decreasing_ over time.

So I bought one somewhat reluctantly, but dang — this thing is cool. If I could only get iTunes 7 to stop crashing….

Did you upgrade to iTunes 7.0.1? It fixed a lot of the crashing problems I had with the 7.0 release.

I think the iPod is the most robust out there… and there is no better interface than iTunes…

I have the 60 gig photo one with about 12,000 songs and it’s never glitched once in the year and a half i’ve had it…

    Enjoy your new baby!

[...] And he’s much more talented now. I remember being smiling proudly the day he shuffled his first playlist, lo those years ago. And now he’s out there playing games and showing off his pictures and movies to people and making new friends everyday. Brings a tear to my eye. [...]

Jess — Actually, 7.0.1 was my initial install, but it still crashes on downloads and I can’t sync my iPod more than once without disconnecting (which means I can’t change sync preferences). Last night I moved my music to an internal drive instead of a firewire drive; maybe that will make a difference in the download-crashing issue.

Mat — Well, I had two iPods die on me inside of six months, hence my harsh judgement of them. iTunes has a nice interface, but for anything approaching serious media management I have to use another tool.

But despite myself I really, really like this new iPod.

I’m rolling along with 7.0, haven’t experienced any of the problems I’ve read about. I’ve downloaded the 7.1 upgrade, but haven’t gotten around to installing.

Dunno about your iPod bad luck. The two previous ones I had were both used, and actually held up very well. My current one is the first I’ve bought brand-new, and so far no glitches; I don’t even think it’s frozen on me yet, after six months of use (and mild abuse). Hopefully you’ll have the same good fortune. How big a hard drive did you get? My 30gig vidPod is noticably thinner than other models, which threw me at first (but now prefer).

What other tool do you need for media management. I am Mr. Anal about it and feel iTunes holds down my needs.

CT, I picked up the 30 gig; I don’t anticipate doing a lot of movie watching on it, but television is likely; also, I try to keep my music collection pared down a bit. So 60, 80 is overkill for me.

Mat, for bulk file management operations I use Media Monkey; at one point I had a long list of iTunes grievances, but that was with 5.0; perhaps things have changed a bit with the newer versions. I shall see.

I myself use MediaMonkey to manage my iPod and music, as I prefer to have some control over my own devices.
