Full Circle

Wanting more interactivity on my blog, even at a minimal level, has made static site generators more trouble than I want to deal with.

Full Circle

I’ve run static websites since 2016. They’ve been pretty much editorial with no real interactivity, and I’ve liked the speed and simplicity. No one was writing blogs anymore anyway, so there wasn't much need for comments.

But now blogs (excuse me, newsletters) are making something of a comeback. I added comments to this weblog a few months ago and I’ve liked the sense of community I got around it, so I don’t want to jettison the comments.

What I didn’t like was everything else. Suddenly I had a database to manage, and something of an API, and I had to make sure those were secure. Also those were more metered services, so I had to keep an eye on them. Typical comment volume weren’t a problem.

Worries, though.

So many worries.

What if I said something dumb and ended up with a huge stack of comments to moderate? What if spammers figured out an easy way to target my API and tried to post 10,000 comments a minute? And more!

There are answers to all of these things, but they are all things and require answers and I. Don’t. Like. That. I’m spending too much time and effort on stuff I don’t enjoy.

The solution? Move back to Wordpress.

I kid! I would never. But I would move to Ghost, so here I am.

Ignore the boilerplate for now

There's a lot of BS on the site right now about memberships and supporting the site, etc. etc. If you’re not an RSS subscriber and you want new posts in your email machine, I’m going to do that stuff. I’ll get to making this site sound more like me, as well as putting my own design stuff on it, over the next several (mumbles incoherently).

I wish I could say this was because I am dedicated to coding in public, but it’s just because I’m impatient.
